Van Driver (Casual - $16.13-$18.33)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of a van or car in transporting passengers on an assigned route. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining the vehicle in a clean and safe condition. The work is performed under the supervision of a higher-ranking departmental employee in accordance with established policies and procedures. The incumbent does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
· Operates a van or car in transporting passengers on a regular schedule;
· Provides physical assistance when needed as participants board and disembark;
· Ensures all passengers wear safety belts and that wheelchairs are locked into position;
· Keeps records regarding vehicle operation including a daily mileage log;
· Instructs passengers about safety practices when entering and leaving van;
· Checks oil, tires, mileage and gasoline;
· Washes and cleans interior and exterior of vehicle and suggests needed repairs;
· Inspects vehicle to ensure that it is in safe operating condition;
· Replaces items as needed or outdated in first aid kit;
· Ensures emergency medical information is available for those being transported.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the geography of the area, and traffic laws and regulations; ability to operate a van or car under all driving and road conditions; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions; willingness to perform routine manual tasks.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a current valid New York State operator’s license appropriate for the vehicle operated.
