Phlebotomist - FT and PT positions ($19.30 to $25.33)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:    The incumbent functions as a health care professional working under direct supervision from the Chief Medical Technologist.  The work primarily entails performing blood collection procedures in accordance with established standards and practices.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

·  Specimen collection via venipuncture and finger/heel stick;

·   Instructs patients on proper procedure for collection of 24 hour and random urine samples;

·  Selects vacutainers needed and draws in correct order;

·  Inverts vacutainers with anticoagulants immediately;

·  Maintains special handling procedures;

·  Documents specimen data;

·  Verifies test orders when unclear of request; makes necessary inquiries with the ordering professional;

·  Handles STAT specimens expeditiously;

·  Labels special notations on specimens;

·  Delivers specimens to appropriate lab section;

·  Obtains necessary medical information as well as consent to perform phlebotomy;

·  Performs general office duties and clerical work including data entry into the hospital laboratory’s computer system;

·  Obtains physician script ensuring ICD9 or diagnosis or diagnosis code is present;

·  Completes patient and insurance data on necessary forms;

·  Cleans work area with bleach solution daily;

·   Ensures adequate supplies are available;

·   Follows all safety regulations including federal regulations governing the handling of specimens;

·   Consults with supervisor on activities, needs, problems and unusual cases;

·   Performs all duties in accordance with established procedures; follows strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis in performing duties;

·   Assists in the orientation and training and volunteers, students, and new employees, when requested;

·   Maintains all hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards and complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies;

·   Attends in-services and meetings, as required. 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good working knowledge of policies, procedures and information system techniques as they relate to clinical laboratory, hospital and/or ancillary services; working knowledge of the principles of customer service; good interpersonal relationships with all LCGH and RHCF personnel; ability to problem solve and follow written and/or verbal directions; skill in data processing and the use of microcomputers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, AND

A)                Completion of a Medical Technician program from an accredited school; or

B)                Completion of a phlebotomy program from an accredited school; or

C)                Six (6) months experience in performing phlebotomy procedures.
