PAINTER ($20.01-$25.24)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves responsibility for the efficient performance of skilled painting and wallpapering tasks on a variety of internal and external surfaces. The work is performed under the direction of a higher-level employee with leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgment in planning and carrying out details of each assignment. Supervision may be exercised over the work of laborers or other employees assigned to assist in painting projects. The incumbent does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
· Applies coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamels or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures using sprayers, paint brushes and rollers;
· Prepares surfaces using sandpaper, wire brushes, or steel wool, and removes old paint from surfaces using paint remover, scrapers, wire brushes, etc.;
· Fills nail holes, cracks and joints with putty, plaster, or other filler;
· Selects premixed paints or prepares paint to match specified colors by blending and mixing requires proportions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances;
· Simulates wood grain, marble, brick or tile effects;
· Creates special effects by applying paint with cloth, brush, sponge, or fingers;
· Rigs, stages and erects scaffolding to paint or wallpaper ceilings and walls;
· Spreads cloth or canvas over floors and furniture to protect them from spattered paint;
· Paints signs on such surfaces as cloth, bulletin boards, walls, doors, windows and equipment;
· Whitewashes and calcimines surfaces;
· Does freehand highlighting, shading and countershading and applies stipple and glaze finishes;
· Prepares walls and ceilings for wallpaper;
· Measures, cuts and applies wallpaper to walls and ceilings;
· Refinishes furniture and fixtures by applying varnish and lacquer;
· Estimates time and materials costs on painting and redecorating jobs;
· Primes walls before painting;
· Mixes various types of paints and stains;
· Cleans brushes and spray equipment;
· May supervise the work of others;
· Other related duties as assigned by Director of Facilities Management.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOKWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions of the painting and wallpapering trade; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to operate sanding and power painting equipment; ability to rig and work from scaffolds; ability to lay out work for self and others; ability to determine colors to detect differences in mixed and simple colors of paints; good motor, hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
A) One year of experience as a journey level painter and wallpaper hanger; or
B) Three years of experience in assisting a journey level painter as a painter’s helper, which shall have involved hanging wallpaper; or
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
