Central Sterile Service technician ($16.25 - $21.93)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position exists in the Lewis County General Hospital and involves responsibility for performing decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilizing, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and equipment needed for daily surgical procedures. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Nurse Manager. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
· Decontaminates and sterilizes surgical instruments, medical supplies, and equipment;
· Assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments;
· Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment;
· Sorts mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing in a timely manner;
· Restocks, labels, and maintains inventory, and submits requisitions for supplies as needed;
· Collects and distributes instruments, trays, crash carts, and facility medical equipment;
· Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room, and in equipment storage areas;
· Verifies that equipment is functioning properly; prepares requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair or replacement; and removes defective equipment;
· Maintains a clean work area;
· Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection prevention standards;
· Monitors and maintains appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies, as well as reporting occurrences immediately to supervisors.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
· Good knowledge of sterilization requirements for surgical equipment, supplies and instruments;
· Good knowledge of applicable sanitary, infection prevention and safety standards;
· Ability to determine appropriate course of action in complex situations;
· Ability to communicate with effectively, both orally and in writing;
· Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work;
· Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, and legal information;
· Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner;
· Ability to work in varying work environments including but not limited to water and other liquids, hazardous vapors and toxic chemicals, electrical and mechanical power equipment, housekeeping and cleaning chemicals, infectious and contagious diseases, and flammable hazards;
· Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; and has
A) Successfully passed a nationally accredited central service exam for Central Service Technicians; and holds and maintains one of the following credentials administered by a nationally accredited Central Service Technician credentialing organization: Certified Registered Central Service Technician, Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician, or a substantially equivalent credential; or
B) Provides evidence of employment as a Central Service Technician in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015.
