Ward Clerk ($15.75 - $20.44)

The work involves assisting nurses and other members of staff by performing routine clerical work associated with patient care.  Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a nurse or other professional employee.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

·  Assists nursing personnel with record documentation;

·  Complete requisitions as required;

·  Maintains filing of documents, lab slips, and dictation;

·  Thins records per established department policy;

·  Makes appointments for patient diagnostic procedures;

·  Handles clerical aspects of admissions, discharges and transfers;

·  Keeps logs of physician’s rounds and sends proper notice for regular rounds;

·  Prints monthly physician’s orders and gives to nursing personnel in proper time frame;

·  Works in coordination with nursing administration to help maintain staffing coverage;

·  Maintains current overtime list;

·  Answers telephone, receives messages and initiates correspondence;

·  Answers call lights in a timely manner;

·  Maintains cleanliness, neatness and order at nursing station;

·  Contacts physicians, relatives of patients and others as necessary;

·  Assists in updating, distributing, filing and maintaining department manuals, policies and procedures.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Working knowledge of medical terminology; ability to establish and maintain satisfactory relationships with others; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare simple reports; ability to operate a personal computer and utilize software programs; clerical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Either:

A)  One year of clerical or patient contact work experience in a health facility, clinic, physician’s office or similar setting; or

B)  Completion of a BOCES or vocational school program in a health services field; or

C)  An equivalent combination of experience and training as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
